Neil Bogart (born Neil Scott Bogatz) was an American record executive and entrepreneur, best known for founding the Casablanca Records label in 1973. Earlier in his career he worked for labels such as Cameo-Parkway and Buddah Records, where he played a central role in the rise of bubblegum pop and in releasing hits by emerging artists and bands. He produced the single “96 Tears” for ? and the Mysterians and held executive positions that gave him influence over musical market trends in the 1960s and 1970s. Under his leadership, Casablanca became synonymous with the disco phenomenon by advancing the careers of artists such as Donna Summer and Village People, while continuing to work in rock—the label’s roster included Kiss, T. Rex, Fanny and others. Bogart also spotted opportunities in funk, signing acts such as Parliament, and later adapted to market changes by creating Boardwalk Records and investing in new wave artists. His career was cut short by illness; Bogart died in 1982. His legacy endures in the commercial and promotional transformation of the music industry of the era, in his influence on the development of popular genres, and in the memories left by artists and by philanthropic initiatives created after his death.
