Nicholas Brendon (Nicholas Brendon Schultz) was an American actor, visual artist, and screenwriter best known for playing Xander Harris on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003) and Kevin Lynch on Criminal Minds (2007–2014). His long association with Buffy made him a central figure in the show’s fan community; he appeared at conventions, contributed scripts to the series’ comics, and received Saturn Award nominations for his performance.
Beyond television, Brendon worked in independent films such as Coherence and Big Gay Love (both 2013), performed in theater, and created projects like the webcomic Very Bad Koalas. Alongside acting, he pursued painting and photography, exhibiting and selling his work.
His life was marked by personal struggles with depression and alcoholism, which led to legal troubles and stints in rehabilitation. Those episodes affected his public image and career, although he continued to appear intermittently in recurring roles and at fan events.
Brendon’s legacy rests primarily on his role in Buffy, which established him in 1990s and 2000s pop culture, and on his continued involvement in expanding the series’ universe through conventions and creative and written contributions related to the character.
