Nicola Sacco, born Ferdinando Sacco, was an Italian worker and anarchist activist who became a central figure in one of the most controversial trials in the United States in the 1920s. Accused, together with Bartolomeo Vanzetti, of the robbery and double homicide at a shoe shop in Braintree, Massachusetts (1920), Sacco spent years in prison amid disputes over evidence, contradictory testimony, and questions of judicial bias. The case unfolded in a post–World War I climate marked by economic crisis, xenophobia, and fear of anarchism, factors that shaped public and legal perceptions. The ballistic evidence presented proved inconclusive, and many defense witnesses were discredited amid translation difficulties and prosecution strategies. After conviction and six years of appeals and international efforts for review or clemency, Sacco was executed in the electric chair on August 23, 1927. Decades later, academic studies identified judicial errors, and in 1977 the governor of Massachusetts formally acknowledged the injustice of the verdict, symbolically rehabilitating Sacco and his companion.
