Nicolau Copérnico was a Polish astronomer and mathematician who developed the heliocentric theory of the Solar System. He was also a canon of the Catholic Church, a governor and administrator, a jurist and a physician.

His heliocentric theory, which placed the Sun at the center of the Solar System, contradicting the then-prevailing geocentric theory (which considered the Earth the center), is considered one of the most important scientific hypotheses of all time, having constituted the starting point of astronomy.

In Copérnico's theory, the Earth moves around the Sun. But his data were corrected by the observations of Tycho Brahe. Based on them and on his own calculations, Johannes Kepler radically reformed the Copernican model and arrived at a realistic description of the Solar System. Galileu Galilei argued that if a stone were dropped from the top of a ship's mast, an observer on board would always see it fall in a straight, vertical line. And, based on this, could never tell whether the vessel was moving or not. If the ship were moving, however, an observer on the shore would see the stone describe a descending curve — because, while it falls, it accompanies the ship's horizontal displacement. Both observers would find that the stone reaches the deck in exactly the same spot: the foot of the mast. For it is not left behind when the ship moves. Similarly, if it were dropped from the top of a tower, the stone would always fall at its base — whether the Earth moves or not.
