Nicole Calfan is a French actress and writer whose career has spanned theater, film and literature. Trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique and briefly a member of the Comédie-Française, she came to prominence early in film roles that presented her as an interpreter of women with ambiguous motives and as a partner to characters involved in crime. She gained international recognition for her portrayal of Ginette in Borsalino and took part in Richard Lester’s adaptations of The Three Musketeers.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s she worked with figures such as Jean Yanne—with whom she had both a personal and professional relationship—and with international directors, also taking roles in spy films and comedies. In the cultural press she drew attention for choices outside the conventional circuit, including a photographic essay and a literary project begun in 1983 with the novel La Folle Enfant.
From the 1990s she reduced her public exposure and returned to film work in the early 2000s, maintaining a steady presence in feature films. Her career combines a diversified artistic practice with a later body of literary work that extends her legacy beyond the screen.
