Nikita Sergeyevich Khrushchev was the political leader of the Soviet Union during the central years of the Cold War, serving as First Secretary of the Communist Party (1953–1964) and as Chairman of the Council of Ministers (1958–1964). Born into a peasant family, he rose through the party ranks from positions in Ukraine and through his association with figures such as Lazar Kaganovich, consolidating power after the death of Joseph Stalin. Khrushchev is known for initiating de-Stalinization, most notably the 1956 “Secret Speech” that denounced Stalin’s purges, and for promoting relatively liberal domestic reforms and modernization programs, including strong support for the Soviet space effort. At the same time, he practiced repressive measures earlier in his career, especially during his administration in the Ukrainian SSR. On the international stage, his leadership coincided with pivotal Cold War moments: political and symbolic successes in the 1950s (Suez, Sputnik) and the dramatic Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, which revealed limits to his foreign policy. His reputation and domestic support declined in the early 1960s, leading to his removal in 1964; retired, he lived in Moscow until his death in 1971.
