Nikolaas “Niko” Tinbergen was a Dutch ethologist and ornithologist whose work helped establish the scientific study of animal behavior. Over his career he observed and experimented with birds and insects, developing rigorous methods to describe behavioral patterns and their proximate and evolutionary causes. His 1951 book, The Study of Instinct, became a standard reference by synthesizing ideas about innate behaviors, releasing mechanisms, and motivational hierarchies. Tinbergen expanded earlier models by proposing that drives accumulate in nervous centers and are released by specific stimuli in cascade, explaining how internal and external factors interact to produce complete actions. International awards and recognition culminated in the 1973 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, shared with Karl von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz, for advances in the understanding of animal behavior. Among his other notable works are studies of gulls and experimental research on foraging bees, which exemplify his empirical and comparative approach. Tinbergen’s legacy remains influential in ethology, behavioral ecology, and evolutionary biology: his analytical categories and experimental methods continue to guide investigations into how and why animals behave as they do.
