Nilson Matta is a Brazilian bassist and composer based in New York since 1985, known for his work at the intersection of jazz and Brazilian music. He began studying double bass in Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s and, by the 1980s, accompanied established names such as João Bosco, Hermeto Pascoal, Chico Buarque and Luiz Bonfá, establishing himself as a studio and stage musician on the national scene. In New York he broadened his international career, performing with artists such as Don Pullen (African-Brazilian Connection), Joe Henderson, Paquito D’Rivera, Yo-Yo Ma and Paul Winter/Oscar Castro-Neves. In 1989 he joined Romero Lubambo and Duduka da Fonseca to form Trio da Paz, a group that gained recognition for its fusion of jazz and Brazilian rhythms and that also backed the singer Maucha Adnet. Over the course of his career he has taken part in dozens of recordings and collaborative projects; among his recordings under his own name are albums such as Walking with My Bass and Jazz Therapy, as well as recent partnerships with vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid in the Brazilian Trio. His career has bridged Brazilian traditions and the international jazz circuit, leaving a legacy as an interpreter, arranger and collaborator in significant musical encounters.
