Nina Graboi, born Gusti Schreyer in Vienna, was a Holocaust survivor who became known as an artist, writer and influential figure in the 1960s psychedelic movement. After fleeing Nazi‑occupied Europe, being briefly detained in Morocco and immigrating to the United States, she reinvented herself in New York City, where she underwent an intense spiritual search and pursued comparative studies of religion, meditation and esotericism. In the late 1960s she became a close collaborator of Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert (Ram Dass) and a cofounder of the League for Spiritual Discovery center in Greenwich Village, the first space in Manhattan dedicated to LSD‑based meditation. As the center’s director, she worked to publicize the uses and risks of psychedelic substances and organized public lectures featuring leaders of the movement. Her career also included cultural and educational initiatives: she founded the Third Force Lecture Bureau, translated plays and created the Woodstock Transformation Center, where she taught courses related to New Age thought. Graboi’s legacy is tied to the intersection of spiritual practice, consciousness research and the countercultural culture of the 1960s and 1970s.
