American character actor Norman Alden (born Norman C. Adelberg) had a long and versatile career in film, television and voice work, beginning in 1957 and spanning nearly five decades. He became a recurring presence on television from the 1950s through the 1980s, appearing in series such as Hennesey, My Three Sons, Hogan’s Heroes and Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, as well as notable episodes of Batman, The Andy Griffith Show and The Dukes of Hazzard. On film, Alden appeared in supporting roles in movies such as Tora! Tora! Tora!, Back to the Future and Ed Wood. His voice work was also prominent: he dubbed Sir Kay in The Sword in the Stone (1963) and voiced the alien Kranix in The Transformers: The Movie (1986), in addition to characters in animated franchises such as Super Friends. Beyond his artistic work, Alden became known as the advertising character “Lou the Mechanic” in AC Delco campaigns, strengthening his recognition with the public. His professional record shows a versatile performer often cast in supporting parts that helped shape dramatic and entertainment scenes in postwar American television and film production. He died in 2012, leaving a legacy as a prolific supporting actor and voice artist in popular productions.
