Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf Jr. was a United States Army general best known for commanding coalition forces in the Gulf War (Operation Desert Storm) against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. A career military officer, he graduated from West Point in 1956, served as an advisor and a battalion commander in Vietnam—where he received several decorations—and later led the 24th Mechanized Infantry Division and took part in the intervention in Grenada. He assumed command of United States Central Command in 1988, with strategic responsibility for the Persian Gulf region. In 1990–1991 he planned and led an air campaign followed by a 100‑hour ground offensive that forced Iraqi troops to withdraw from Kuwait, coordinating a large multinational force. After retiring, he devoted himself to philanthropic activities and maintained an occasional public presence. Schwarzkopf was known for an energetic command style and for his skill in dealing with allies and the press, traits that secured his prominence and legacy in American military history.
