Norman Stewart Hughson Lamont, Baron Lamont of Lerwick, is a British Conservative politician best known for his ministerial career under Margaret Thatcher and John Major. Trained as an economist, he worked at the investment bank N M Rothschild & Sons before entering Parliament in 1972 as the Member of Parliament for Kingston-upon-Thames. He served as a minister in departments including Energy, Industry and Defence before taking on senior roles at the Treasury. In 1990 he became Chancellor of the Exchequer, a post he held until 1993. He inherited the exchange-rate policy linked to the European Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM) and faced a recessionary economy with high inflation; his term was defined by efforts to stabilize inflation and by debates over Britain’s participation in European monetary union. His comment that unemployment was the price of lower inflation and his controversial reference to “green shoots” of recovery are widely remembered. After leaving the House of Commons, Lamont was raised to the peerage as a life member of the House of Lords in 1998 and remained active in the financial sector as a director and adviser to funds and companies. A Eurosceptic on European issues, he became an advocate for Brexit and participated in related initiatives.
