Novalis, the pen name of Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg, was a central figure of early German Romanticism, working as a poet, writer, mystic and philosopher. Of aristocratic origin, he also held administrative posts at the salt mines, but his renown rests chiefly on his literary output and notebooks, which reveal wide-ranging learning in philosophy and the natural sciences.
Creator of the symbol of the “blue flower,” Novalis developed the literary fragment — a form shaped in dialogue with Friedrich Schlegel — to fuse poetry, philosophical reflection and scientific inquiry, a project that positioned him as a formative intellectual of early Romanticism. His work reflects a tension between a mystical longing for a Christian republic and the Enlightenment and political currents of his time.
His personal experience, notably his early engagement and the death of the young Sophie von Kühn, deeply affected his writing, feeding themes of loss, transcendence and poetic religiosity. The notebooks and fragments, published more widely in the twentieth century, consolidated his reputation as a thinker who sought to integrate science, art and mysticism.
