Octave Pirmez was a Belgian writer in the French language, known for work marked by melancholy and for his solitary life at the Château d’Acoz. Born into a bourgeois family, he devoted himself to the study of belles-lettres, the arts and philosophy, and chose a literary career that encompassed poetry, essays and reflective prose. His writing examines themes of contemplation, isolation and interior life, earning him the nickname “solitaire d’Acoz”.
Pirmez’s output includes volumes of maxims and aphorisms, as well as Jours de solitude, published posthumously in 1883. He maintained friendships within artistic circles, notably with the painter Félicien Rops, and received critical support from contemporaries such as Georges Rodenbach and Charles De Coster. His work was the subject of biographical and critical studies in subsequent decades.
Marguerite Yourcenar, a granddaughter by marriage, devoted extensive reflection to his figure, helping to reassess his literary legacy. Today his name remains associated with the Hainaut region, where his cultural memory is preserved, and the school in Lausprelle keeps his memory alive.
