Oliver Heaviside was an English self-taught mathematician and electrical engineer whose work reformulated the mathematical language of electricity and magnetism. Working largely without a permanent academic post, he translated Maxwell’s ideas into operational tools and developed the theory of transmission lines, showing how distributed inductance reduces attenuation and distortion in telegraph cables. These contributions were decisive for telegraph practice and for the development of electrical communications.

Over his career he published influential articles and books, including the volumes of Electromagnetic Theory and the collected Electrical Papers, in which he introduced operator methods in mathematical physics and discussed the propagation of electromagnetic induction. His pragmatic approach and operational formulas anticipated techniques that later became commonplace in engineering and theoretical physics.

Although often marginalized by institutions during his lifetime, his work achieved posthumous recognition and left a lasting legacy: Heaviside’s equations and methods continue to underpin the study of transmission lines and applied electromagnetic theory.
