Ornette Coleman was an American saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer who played a central role in inventing and establishing the free jazz movement in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Fort Worth, Texas, he began in rhythm and blues and bebop before developing his own improvisational language, characterized by fluid harmonies and an emphasis on ear and melody rather than conventional progressions. His quartet with Don Cherry and Charlie Haden became a touchstone after albums such as The Shape of Jazz to Come (1959) and the compilation Beauty Is a Rare Thing, while the double album Free Jazz (1960) cemented the concept of large-scale collective improvisation. Coleman’s sonic innovations included use of a plastic saxophone, the deliberate omission of piano in many groups and, later, the incorporation of trumpet, violin and orchestral textures. In subsequent decades he expanded his palette, exploring electric forms and rhythms close to funk on works such as Dancing in Your Head and Virgin Beauty, and collaborating with musicians from diverse fields, from Pat Metheny to Jerry Garcia. Recognized for changing the course of jazz, he left a lasting legacy as a composer and instigator of new sonic possibilities.
