Orville Wright was one of two American brothers — alongside Wilbur — recognized as pioneers of aviation for developing the first heavier‑than‑air machine capable of controlled flight (17 December 1903). A mechanic and entrepreneur, Orville took an active part in applied aerodynamic research, contributing to the development of wing warping — a wing‑twisting system that allowed roll control and became the basis for fixed‑wing aircraft. The pair distinguished themselves by prioritizing pilot control: they built an improvised wind tunnel and carried out extensive glider tests to obtain data that led to more effective wings and propellers. The patent they obtained covered the aerodynamic control system specifically, not merely the flying machine. Before dedicating himself to aviation, Orville worked in printing and the bicycle business, activities that financed their aeronautical experiments. The Wright brothers’ legacy is the shift from experimental aviation to the practice of controlled flight, influencing aircraft design and control in the following decades.
