Oscar "Zeta" Acosta was a Mexican-American lawyer, writer, and activist associated with the Chicano Movement in the 1960s and 1970s. He acted as counsel for Chicano groups and leaders from East Los Angeles — including participants in the school walkouts, members of the Brown Berets, and figures such as Rodolfo Gonzales — gaining notoriety for his forceful defenses against abuses by local authorities.
A law graduate after studies in San Francisco, he worked in anti-poverty legal services before establishing himself as a community lawyer in East L.A. In 1970 he ran for Los Angeles County sheriff, a campaign marked by confrontations with the police establishment and by his populist stance, which drew more than one hundred thousand votes.
As an author, he published semi-autobiographical novels: Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973), works that blend fiction and activism in their portrayals of the Chicano struggle and events such as the 1970 Chicano Moratorium. He was also close to journalist Hunter S. Thompson, whose book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas includes a character inspired by Acosta.
He disappeared during a trip to Mexico in 1974 and is presumed dead; his writings and legal work remained reference points for Chicano activism and the debate over civil rights in the United States.
