Oskar Lafontaine is a German politician whose career shaped the country’s centre-left in recent decades. Prominent as Minister‑President of Saarland from 1985 to 1998, he established himself as a regional manager committed to preserving the local industrial base, especially steel and mining, and served as President of the Bundesrat in 1992–93. He became federal leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the mid‑1990s and was the party’s candidate for the Chancellorship in 1990.
After the SPD’s victory in 1998, he briefly held the Federal Ministry of Finance in Gerhard Schröder’s government, but resigned in 1999 citing a lack of internal cooperation. In the following years he became a prominent critic of Schröder’s economic reforms, particularly the Agenda 2010, and left the SPD in 2005. He took part in founding the Labour and Social Justice – The Electoral Alternative (WASG) and, after the 2007 merger, became co‑chair of The Left (Die Linke).
As a public figure, Lafontaine was polarizing: praised by those calling for greater social protection and critical of “financial capitalism,” he was also the subject of controversy and intense press coverage. He retained regional relevance by leading the opposition in Saarland from 2012 to 2022, until his departure from the party in 2022, when he declared that it no longer represented an alternative to growing inequality.
