Otto Paul Hermann Diels was a German chemist whose academic career developed mainly at the universities of Berlin and Kiel. Trained at the University of Berlin under Emil Fischer, he focused on research and teaching, eventually heading a department before moving to Kiel in 1915, where he remained until his retirement in 1945. His most notable contribution, in collaboration with Kurt Alder, was the development of the reaction that became known as the Diels–Alder reaction. This method for synthesizing unsaturated cycles, particularly cyclohexenes, opened practical avenues for the production of synthetic rubber and various polymers, expanding the applications of organic synthesis in industry. For this body of work, Diels and Alder received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1950, a recognition of both the theoretical and technological importance of their discovery. Beyond his scientific activity, Diels had a family life and cultural interests, and he left a lasting legacy in organic chemistry through the reaction that bears his name.
