Otto Hahn was a German chemist who specialized in radioactivity; his academic career placed him at the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Chemistry in Berlin and earned him the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He is known for pioneering work in measuring beta decay and for the identification of protactinium (with Lise Meitner, 1918), and he made decisive contributions to early twentieth‑century radiochemistry. In the 1930s, his investigations into bombarding uranium with neutrons led to the experimental discovery of the products of nuclear fission; the theoretical interpretation of that phenomenon was published by Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch. During World War II Hahn took part in the German nuclear energy project and continued to study the enormous release of energy associated with fission. After the war he became an outspoken opponent of the use of nuclear weapons, signing in 1957 the declaration known as the "Göttingen Eighteen" and taking part in public debates about scientists’ responsibility. His career is marked both by laboratory contributions to radiochemistry and by controversies over recognition of the roles of exiled colleagues.
