Otto Weininger was an Austrian philosopher whose work, despite his short life, exerted a lasting influence in the early twentieth century. Trained at the University of Vienna, he undertook an ambitious program of philosophical and psychological inquiry that culminated in Geschlecht und Charakter (Sex and Character, 1903), a book that combines reflections on sexuality, identity and morality. Its publication, followed by his suicide, drew attention and controversy, earning praise from figures such as August Strindberg and criticism for alleged plagiarism and for his theses on women and Judaism. Weininger engaged with the intellectual currents of his time: he frequented Wagnerian circles, had contact with Sigmund Freud and influenced later thinkers including Ludwig Wittgenstein and James Joyce—although his reception was ambivalent. Passages of his work were later appropriated by nationalist ideologues decades afterward, even though his position on race does not align straightforwardly with Nazi doctrines. Weininger’s legacy remains controversial: his attempt to articulate a philosophy of sex and identity shaped debates about modernity, Jewish identity and intellectual misogyny, and continues to be the subject of critical study in the history of ideas.
