Pope Nicholas V, born Tommaso Parentucelli, was a central figure of the papacy in the early Renaissance, serving as Bishop of Rome from 1447 to 1455. A seasoned diplomat and humanist educated in Bologna and Florence, he was notable for reconciling tensions and restoring papal authority: he secured the resignation of the antipope Felix V, ended the conflicts stemming from the Council of Basel, and obtained the Concordat of Vienna, which confirmed clerical privileges and reservations in Germany. His pontificate coincided with major historical shifts — the fall of Constantinople and the end of the Hundred Years’ War — and he raised funds that he invested in ambitious urban and cultural projects in Rome. He promoted fortifications, restored aqueducts and churches, rebuilt bridges, and launched initial plans for the future St. Peter’s Basilica, aiming to make the city a center of letters and the arts. A patron of humanists and a collector of books, he encouraged the arrival of Greek scholars after the capture of Constantinople and sponsored translations and artistic works, such as the Niccoline Chapel by Fra Angelico. His legacy blends political action and cultural renewal, leaving lasting marks on Rome’s architectural and intellectual landscape.
