Pat McCormick (Patricia Joan Keller) was one of the leading figures in U.S. competitive diving in the 1950s. Trained by Sammy Lee and noticed as a young athlete by the Los Angeles Athletic Club, she built a career defined by technical consistency and mastery of the sport’s two main events: springboard and platform. Her most notable achievement was becoming the first female diver to win four Olympic gold medals, taking both events in Helsinki (1952) and retaining both titles in Melbourne (1956). Her career also included victories at the Pan American Games in 1951 and 1955 and numerous national championships during a period of dominance that brought her international recognition. Honored with awards and tributes, she was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportswoman of the Year in 1956 and inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1965. After retiring from competition, she maintained a symbolic presence in the Olympic movement, serving as one of the bearers of the Olympic emblem at the opening ceremony of the 1984 Los Angeles Games. Her legacy is also evident in her family’s continuity in the sport: her daughter Kelly became a high-level diver and Olympic medalist in subsequent decades, extending Pat McCormick’s influence on American diving.
