Patricia Dianne Krenwinkel is a convicted murderer and former member of the group known as the Manson Family, led by Charles Manson and responsible for the Tate‑LaBianca murders in 1969. Directly involved in the invasions that led to the deaths of actress Sharon Tate and six others, Krenwinkel took an active role in the attacks at Cielo Drive and at the LaBianca residence, and has confessed to stabbing victims during the assaults. Tried alongside Manson and other members, she was sentenced to death in 1971; the sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment following the suspension of capital punishment in California in early 1972. She has since served her sentence in units of the California prison system, with repeated parole requests denied on the grounds of assessed risk to public safety. During her time in prison, Krenwinkel has publicly distanced herself from Manson and devoted herself to internal programs such as inmate literacy and support for people with substance use disorders. Her story remains linked to the social and cultural impact of the crimes committed by the cult and to the intense debate over responsibility, manipulation, and collective violence.
