Paul Auster was an American writer and filmmaker whose work blends elements of the absurd, existentialism and mirrored narrative structures—stories within stories that recall thrillers and nested-box puzzles. Author of bestsellers such as The Music of Chance, The Book of Illusions, Travels in the Scriptorium and the ambitious 4 3 2 1, Auster frequently explored themes of identity, chance and memory, moving between fiction, essays and translations of French poets. A Columbia University graduate who lived in France, he showed a strong affinity for French literature, translating authors such as André Breton and Stéphane Mallarmé and citing influences ranging from Dostoevsky to Beckett and Proust. In addition to his literary output, he directed films — including Lulu on the Bridge — and helped coordinate and edit important volumes, among them works by Samuel Beckett. In later years he also turned to nonfiction, publishing a biography of Stephen Crane and reflections on gun violence in the United States. His work received wide recognition in Europe and the U.S., earning awards such as the Prix France Culture and the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award, and leaving a lasting mark on contemporary fiction and literary translation.
