Paul Citroen was a Dutch artist born in Germany whose work encompassed photography, drawing, painting and teaching. Trained at the Bauhaus, he was directly influenced by masters such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and Johannes Itten, and quickly became known for his mastery of collage and modern composition. His most emblematic work, Metropolis (1923), became an aesthetic reference for the period and even influenced the visual language of expressionist cinema.
Throughout the 1920s and 1930s he developed a significant photographic output marked by experimentation and a close affinity with the work of Erwin Blumenfeld. In 1930 he co‑founded the Nieuwe Kunstschool (New School of Art) in Amsterdam with Charles Roelofsz, an educational project that reflected his commitment to art education, although it closed for financial reasons in 1937.
After joining the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, his career combined teaching and artistic practice. Among other high‑profile commissions, he designed the monumental postage stamps of 1949, and in the 1960s he focused mainly on portraiture, producing likenesses of Dutch public figures. His output also includes texts and catalogues on the theory and practice of drawing and painting.
