Paul Dukas was a French composer associated with musical modernism, active mainly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His orchestral and chamber works display technical refinement and a strong sense of drama, although he destroyed part of his output out of rigorous perfectionism.
He is internationally remembered for the symphonic poem L'apprenti sorcier (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), based on Goethe’s ballad, which gained popular exposure through its use in the film Fantasia (1940). Among his orchestral pieces are notable overtures such as Polyeucte and Le roi Lear, as well as the Symphony in C major. In chamber music, works that stand out include the Villanelle for horn and piano and pieces for cello and piano.
Dukas also composed for the stage and ballet, notably the opera Ariane et Barbe-Bleue (libretto by Maurice Maeterlinck) and the ballet La Péri. Known as a demanding teacher, his pupils included Olivier Messiaen, and he maintained a friendship with Claude Debussy. His legacy remains tied to technical excellence and the lasting impact of a small number of key works.
