Paul Erdős was a Hungarian mathematician of great prominence, known for his exceptional productivity and collaborative style. He published more than a thousand papers and worked with hundreds of coauthors, an initiative that gave rise to the famous “Erdős number.” His contributions focused on combinatorial analysis, graph theory, number theory, probability theory, and set theory, and he was noted for seeking simple, elegant solutions to difficult problems. Trained and awarded his doctorate in Hungary, he faced antisemitism in the 1930s, lived and worked in several countries, and adopted a nomadic lifestyle, moving between universities to collaborate in person with other mathematicians. He received major honors, including the Cole Prize and the Wolf Prize in Mathematics (1983). Erdős was also known for peculiar habits and aphorisms that became part of mathematical culture. His principal legacy is his influence on collaborative practice in the discipline and the vast collection of problems and ideas that continue to inspire research in combinatorics and number theory.
