Paul Morand was a French writer and diplomat whose literary output—chiefly short stories and novellas—was notable for its clipped style, vivid imagery and irony. His most productive period came between the two world wars, when his works found readers among high society and the artistic avant‑garde; he is often associated with modernism and imagism. Morand’s work reflects a class‑based cosmopolitanism, stemming from training in political science and a diplomatic career that took him to and through numerous European and Asian capitals. Born into a culturally privileged milieu, Morand maintained close ties with figures in theatre, music and the visual arts, moving in the salons and intellectual circles of Paris and London. His taste for luxury, speed and travel permeates both the themes and tone of much of his writing, which is characterized by a pessimistic view of modernity and elitist positions on social hierarchy and race. Politically and ideologically controversial, Morand aligned himself with conservative currents and held posts under the French State regime during the Second World War. Despite the controversies, he influenced subsequent literary generations and was received into the Académie française in 1968, consolidating his prominence in the French literary canon.
