Paul Peter Ewald was a German physicist and crystallographer recognized as a pioneer of X-ray diffraction methods. Trained in Göttingen and Munich under figures such as Hilbert and Sommerfeld, his doctoral thesis established laws for the propagation of X-rays in crystals and laid the foundations of the dynamical theory of diffraction, contributing to the theoretical interpretation of experimental patterns.

Over his career Ewald held academic positions at technical institutes and universities in Germany, where he developed mathematical methods applied to the study of dipolar fields in crystal lattices—the so-called “theta function”—and published widely cited papers that influenced fundamental texts on crystal lattices. He also served as coeditor of a specialist crystallography journal.

His legacy lies in the theoretical formalism that enabled experimental advances in crystallography and in conceptual tools still used to analyze crystal structures. Recognized for the mathematical depth of his work, Ewald helped establish crystallography as a central discipline for physics and materials science in the 20th century.
