Paul Ricœur was one of the most influential French philosophers after World War II, with work spanning phenomenology, hermeneutics, philosophy of language, psychoanalysis and political philosophy. A professor at the Sorbonne and at universities such as Louvain and Yale, he combined theoretical reflection with cultural concerns, striving to understand meaning, subjectivity and the heuristic function of fiction—especially literary and historical fiction. His writings examine the relationship between the voluntary and the involuntary, the fallible condition of the human person, and the problem of evil and guilt, as shown in the series Philosophy of Will and in The Symbolism of Evil. In Freud and Philosophy: An Essay on Interpretation and in The Conflict of Interpretations, Ricœur developed a hermeneutics that seeks to balance a plurality of interpretive models with the demand for meaning, integrating contributions from Freud, Husserl and Christian existentialism. In Time and Narrative and in Memory, History, Forgetting, he linked narrative temporality with historiography and reflected on cultural memory and historical truth. His legacy lies in the revaluation of the notion of the person and in the attempt to found a philosophy of language capable of accounting for the symbols that constitute social and moral life.
