Paul Samuelson was a prominent twentieth‑century American economist, known for synthesizing neoclassical microeconomics with Keynesian macroeconomics—the foundation of contemporary economics. Trained at the University of Chicago and holding a doctorate from Harvard, he taught for many years at MIT, where he helped raise the department to international prominence. Author of influential works such as Foundations of Economic Analysis and the textbook Economics, Samuelson popularized the use of mathematics as a central method in economics and established key concepts in consumption, capital, public finance, and general equilibrium. His textbook became the most widely used in higher education and spread the so‑called "neoclassical synthesis." He received the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel in 1970, the first American to be so honored in the field, and served as an economic consultant to the U.S. government. Known for his critiques of extreme laissez‑faire, he advocated a mixed economy in which state regulation and markets coexist. Samuelson's legacy lies in the mathematical formalization of economic analysis and the lasting influence of his books and models on teaching, theory, and public policy.
