Paul Shaffer is a Canadian musician, arranger, and television personality, best known for his role as musical director and bandleader on David Letterman’s shows from 1982 to 2015. Trained in sociology at the University of Toronto, he began his career as musical director for theatrical productions and joined the resident band of Saturday Night Live (1975–1980), where he also took part in sketches and collaborations with leading figures of American comedy. His prominence was secured when he composed the theme and led “The World’s Most Dangerous Band” on Late Night and, later, the CBS Orchestra on the Late Show, a role that made him a central figure in the sound and identity of those programs for more than three decades. At the same time, he worked as a studio musician and collaborator with artists across rock, jazz, and soul, and released two solo albums. In addition to appearances in films and television specials, Shaffer has composed scores and contributed music to recent projects such as the series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction. His legacy is tied to musical versatility, an ability to move between genres, and the role of cultural interlocutor who helped shape the musical environment of the modern talk show.
