Paul Adolph Volcker Jr. was an American economist and financial administrator, best known for his role as the 12th Chairman of the Federal Reserve (1979–1987). Before that, he led the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (1975–1979) and held key positions at the U.S. Treasury, where he took part in crucial decisions on international monetary policy at the end of the Bretton Woods system. As Fed chairman, Volcker implemented tight monetary policies—known as the "Volcker shock"—that raised interest rates to record levels in the early 1980s to tame the high inflation that had afflicted the American economy since the previous decade. Those measures are widely credited with reducing double-digit inflation to around 3% within a few years, although they triggered a deep recession and high unemployment. After leaving the Fed, Volcker remained an influential public figure by leading economic councils and commissions, including serving in an advisory capacity during the 2008–2009 financial crisis. His legacy is defined by emphasis on the credibility of monetary policy and on prioritizing inflation control as a condition for long-term economic stability.
