Percival Lowell was an American mathematician, author, businessman, and amateur astronomer whose work shaped planetary astronomy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A member of Boston’s prominent Lowell family, he graduated from Harvard in 1876 and turned his attention to the study of Mars, publishing works such as Mars (1895), Mars and Its Canals (1906), and Mars as the Abode of Life (1908). From observations made in Flagstaff, Arizona, he promoted the hypothesis of Martian canals and argued for the possibility of intelligent life on the planet, a position that was highly influential and also controversial at the time. In 1894 he founded the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, taking advantage of the altitude and clear skies for detailed observations. In his later years he concentrated on the search for the so-called “Planet X” beyond Neptune; that institutional and observational effort later culminated in Clyde Tombaugh’s discovery of Pluto in 1930, whose name and symbol were influenced by Lowell’s initials. Lowell’s legacy includes, beyond the observatory, several astronomical honors — such as asteroid 1886 Lowell and lunar and Martian craters bearing his name — and a body of written work that shaped debates about the habitability and mapping of Mars.
