Perry Ellis was an American fashion designer who, from the mid-1970s onward, refreshed women’s sportswear and established an eponymous fashion house. Trained in business administration with a master’s in retail, he began his career as a buyer and merchandiser, gaining experience in stores and sportswear companies until launching his first women’s line, Portfolio, in 1976. In 1978 he founded Perry Ellis International and began setting trends with deconstructed cuts, textured knits and layered silhouettes that updated the era’s “Big Look.” During the 1980s he expanded his brand into menswear, footwear, accessories and fragrances, establishing himself alongside names such as Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren. His signature work included high-quality sweaters, cropped trousers and experiments in proportion — broadened shoulders, short skirts and mixed textures — that influenced the American wardrobe of the period. In 1982 he received the Designer of the Year award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. As an executive he also served as president of the CFDA (1984–1986). His legacy endures in an emphasis on modern, comfortable and accessible pieces that helped reshape American fashion in the 1970s and ’80s.
