Persis Khambatta was an Indian model and actress of Parsi origin whose career crossed between India and international cinema. She began in fashion as a teenager, winning the national Miss India title in 1965 and competing in Miss Universe, which launched her as an advertising face and earned her a contract with Revlon.
Facing barriers in the Indian film industry—partly attributed to an appearance considered “Westernized” by local standards—Khambatta sought opportunities abroad. She appeared in minor film roles from the 1970s and gained international recognition for her role as Lieutenant Ilia in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979), her best-remembered performance.
Her career is notable for the shift from national beauty model to actress in international productions, standing out as one of the few Indian artists at the time to break into Hollywood. Khambatta’s legacy remains linked to female representation and the presence of Indian performers in global film projects.
