Pete Shelley, born Peter Campbell McNeish, was an English singer, songwriter and guitarist whose career helped define British punk and its shift toward synth-pop. He co‑founded the Buzzcocks in 1976 and became the band's lead vocalist and principal lyricist after Howard Devoto's departure, contributing to classics such as “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t’ve)” and to the albums Another Music in a Different Kitchen, Love Bites and A Different Kind of Tension.

Moving beyond an exclusively guitar‑based approach, Shelley embraced electronics and experimental production: he released the solo album Sky Yen, worked with producer Martin Rushent and achieved success with the single “Homosapien” (1981), which returned him to the international circuit and stirred controversy for its subject matter. His solo output also included XL1 and Heaven and the Sea, reflecting an interest in music technology and innovations such as computer programs tied to records.

Shelley’s legacy covers his influence on generations of punk and new wave musicians, Buzzcocks reunions and varied collaborations. Known for melding punk urgency with electronic experimentation, he remains a touchstone in British music of recent decades.
