Pete Wilson is an American lawyer and Republican politician best known for serving as governor of California from 1991 to 1999. Before that he built a long public career in executive and legislative posts: three terms as mayor of San Diego (1971–1983) and two terms as a U.S. senator from California (1983–1991). A law graduate of UC Berkeley who served as a Marine Corps officer, Wilson began his political career at the state level in the 1960s, winning election to the California State Assembly in 1966. As mayor he implemented administrative reforms, led downtown San Diego revitalization and infrastructure financing measures, and helped keep the San Diego Padres in the city. In the Senate he positioned himself as a fiscal conservative, backed initiatives such as the Strategic Defense Initiative, and voted for the Civil Liberties Act of 1988. He left Congress after winning the governor’s race in 1990. As governor he signed the “three strikes” law, supported energy-sector privatizations, and backed term limits for elected offices. His support for Proposition 187, which sought to restrict immigrants’ access to public services, marked his administration and is often cited in discussions about the political consequences of an anti-immigration agenda for Republican support in California. After leaving office he worked in business and academia and continued a public role as a visiting fellow at a political studies center.
