Peter Debye was a physical chemist of Dutch origin whose intellectual work spanned theoretical physics and physical chemistry. Trained in Munich and influenced by Arnold Sommerfeld, he made fundamental contributions to solid‑state theory and solution chemistry in the early twentieth century. His extension of heat‑capacity theory, incorporating phonons, and the introduction of elliptical orbits into the atomic model broadened understanding of the structure and behavior of matter. In collaboration with Erich Hückel, Debye formulated the Debye‑Hückel equation (1923), a milestone in describing conductivity and interactions in electrolyte solutions. His work on X‑ray diffraction and on explanations related to the Compton effect also figures among his contributions to experimental and theoretical physics. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1936 for his investigations into molecular structures, Debye held academic and leadership positions at European institutions and, from 1938, worked in the United States, teaching at Cornell University. His legacy endures in numerous theories and formulas that remain central to theoretical physics and chemistry.
