An English actor with an international career, Peter Finch built a reputation in film, theatre and radio through performances in Australia and the United Kingdom. After training in the dramatic arts in Sydney and working extensively in radio and vaudeville, he rose to prominence in Australian films of the 1930s and 1940s and served in the Australian Army during the Second World War. In the postwar years he co‑founded the Mercury Theatre Company in Sydney and established himself as one of the country’s leading radio actors. Encouraged by Laurence Olivier to move to England, Finch joined the Old Vic company and expanded his work on the British stage and screen. He became known for his dramatic range and commanding on‑screen presence, earning BAFTAs and critical acclaim. His best‑known role was television news anchor Howard Beale in Network (1976), which won him a posthumous Academy Award for Best Actor. Finch’s career is remembered for a successful transition across media—radio, theatre and film—and for his ability to portray intense, complex characters. His collection of awards and sustained critical regard reinforce his legacy as one of the great British film actors of the twentieth century.
