Peter Harlan was a German multi-instrumentalist and instrument maker notable for popularizing historically based models accessible to the general public. Trained as a maker of stringed instruments, he established a workshop in the Markneukirchen region and dedicated himself to reproducing violins, violas, clavichords and, above all, the vielle, aiming to adapt old instruments for amateur musicians. In the 1920s he worked for the magazine Der Gitarrenfreund and encountered recorders through the influence of Wilibald Gurlitt. Based on experiments and exchanges with specialists such as Max Seiffert and Arnold Dolmetsch, Harlan played a decisive role in spreading the so-called German fingering recorder — a model easy to learn and inexpensive, which achieved wide circulation. In 1930 he founded the Harlan Trio, a pioneer in historically informed performance of repertoire from the Middle Ages through the Baroque. After the war he settled in Sternberg Castle, where he resumed instrument production and created an educational center with courses, construction workshops and concerts, training and inspiring generations of beginners. His legacy is associated with the democratization of music education and the domestic adoption of historical instruments, as well as with the maintenance of family workshops that continued the work after his death.
