Peter Max (Peter Max Finkelstein) is a German–American artist whose work became an icon of the visual culture of the 1960s and 1970s. Known for his intense use of color and a psychedelic aesthetic in dialogue with Pop Art, Max worked across multiple media—painting, printmaking, collage, sculpture and design—and expanded his output into mass-produced objects and media, from clothing to applied arts.

Over the course of his career, Max signed posters, album covers and public commissions: he designed postage stamps, border murals, album covers and commemorative paintings, and was invited as an official artist for events such as the World Cup, the Super Bowl and music award shows. His series on the Statue of Liberty and works depicting public figures reinforced his place in the popular imagination.

Max played an active role in the countercultural scene, producing graphic material associated with the 1960s movement and gaining international exposure through exhibitions and commercial projects. Works such as his portrait series and public commissions helped establish his reputation as a representative figure of a period when art and popular culture were intertwined.

In recent decades, reports indicated health problems that affected his production and the management of his work. Despite this, his influence remains visible in the colorful iconography associated with the psychedelic era and mass cultural consumption.
