Peter Brian Medawar was a British biologist whose research laid the foundations for modern tissue and organ transplantation. With collaborators such as Leslie Brent and Rupert E. Billingham, he demonstrated the principle of acquired immunological tolerance—the ability of the immune system to stop reacting to certain tissues—work that established grafting practice and earned him, jointly with Frank Macfarlane Burnet, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1960.
Trained in zoology at Magdalen College, Oxford, Medawar held professorships in Birmingham and at University College London, and he directed the National Institute for Medical Research at Mill Hill until a stroke left him partly incapacitated. His career includes practical contributions, such as a glue for nerves useful in surgeries during World War II, and a significant role in shaping the theoretical development of contemporary immunology.
Beyond his scientific output, Medawar became known for his writing and sharp humor in popular science texts. His family background and personal experiences influenced his critical view of society, but he is remembered above all for his lasting scientific legacy in biomedicine and his influence on generations of immunologists and surgeons.
