Peter Shaffer was an English playwright, screenwriter, and novelist whose work moved easily between satirical comedy and philosophical drama. He established himself in theatre from the late 1950s with Five Finger Exercise, and became a central figure on the British stage with plays regularly mounted at the National Theatre. His output explores intense, conflicting themes — from imperial conquest in The Royal Hunt of the Sun to the psychological tensions of Equus.
Two of his best‑known works, Equus (1973) and Amadeus (1979), not only dominated stages in London and New York but were also adapted for film by Shaffer himself. Amadeus earned him the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and both plays won the Tony Award for Best Play during their Broadway runs, reflecting the rare international impact of a contemporary dramatist.
Beyond theatre and film, Shaffer worked across genres, including coauthored detective novels, and collaborated with prominent actors such as Maggie Smith. Honoured with distinctions including the CBE and a knighthood, he left a lasting legacy in contemporary drama through his blend of formal craft and moral and psychological concern.
