Peter Elliott Shumlin is an American Democratic politician who served as the 81st governor of Vermont from 2011 to 2017. Before that, he built a long career in the state legislature, holding a seat in the Vermont House and serving multiple terms as state senator for the Windham district, including a stint as president pro tempore of the Senate. He was also an unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor in 2002. During his administration, Shumlin led several high-profile legislative initiatives, including passage of laws on physician-assisted suicide and a pioneering U.S. requirement for labeling genetically modified foods. He served as chair of the Democratic Governors Association during his first two terms, a role that raised his national profile. His time in office faced significant challenges, such as the damage caused by Hurricane Irene, which required extensive infrastructure rebuilding and budget reassessment. He also drove debate over creating a state single-payer health care system, a campaign promise that shaped his agenda. Shumlin chose not to seek reelection in 2016; his legacy combines progressive policies on health and the environment with crisis management and active participation in party organizations.
