Samuel Morris Steward, best known by the pen name Phil Andros, was a poet, novelist, teacher and a central figure in 20th-century gay culture in the United States. After training and an early academic career in English, he left the university world to devote himself to tattooing and erotic writing. In Chicago and later in the San Francisco area he worked as a tattooist for sailors, gangs and motorcycle clubs — including the Hells Angels — and left a mark on the craft, influencing later names such as Cliff Raven and Ed Hardy.

At the same time, Steward kept extensive diaries and a detailed sexual archive that brought him into contact with Alfred Kinsey and the Institute for Sex Research; he supplied Kinsey with accounts, photographs and documentary material that contributed to studies of male sexuality. From the 1950s he published homoerotic and erotic short stories and novels, many under the name Phil Andros, exploring themes such as sadomasochism, interracial encounters and the aesthetics of the virile man.

Also the author of memoirs and chronicles about gay subculture and the history of American tattooing, Steward left a multifaceted body of work that combines literature, sexual documentation and visual arts. His archive and a modern biography of his life have helped reassess his influence on postwar literary, artistic and fetish communities.
