Philip Lamantia was an American poet whose work established itself between visionary currents and the postwar San Francisco literary scene. His verses, often ecstatic and dreamlike, probe the subconscious, desire, and terror, blending everyday experience with images and typographic arrangements that recall concrete poetry. He published from a young age and maintained a prolific career: collections and books such as Erotic Poems (1946), Ekstasis (1959), Narcotica (1959), and Selected Poems 1943–1966 solidified his reputation. The edition of The Collected Poems (2013) and posthumous prose volumes and selections attest to continuing critical interest. Called by some critics “the most visionary poet of the American postwar generation,” Lamantia also lectured and influenced later poets and scholars. His literary legacy endures through critical editions, academic studies, and memoirs, keeping him a relevant figure for understanding twentieth‑century American poetic avant‑gardes.
