Philip Mairet was a multifaceted British intellectual—designer, writer, journalist, translator and biographer—whose work was concentrated mainly between the 1910s and 1940s. Trained in applied arts, he worked as a draughtsman within the Arts and Crafts circle; later he became involved with the Old Vic theatre and established a career as a journalist and editor.
As literary editor and later editor of the New English Weekly, Mairet played a central role in disseminating interconnected intellectual currents—from Christian socialism to Social Credit—and in promoting debates on agriculture that anticipated organic farming practices. He translated important authors, including Jean-Paul Sartre, and wrote biographies of figures such as Patrick Geddes, A. R. Orage and John Middleton Murry.
His career included involvement with influential intellectual groups (Orage’s circle, the Chandos group) and with thinkers such as Dimitrije Mitrinović; he had formative experiences during the First World War, between service in relief volunteering and acts of conscientious objection. Mairet’s legacy lies at the intersection of cultural criticism, editing and the promotion of alternative ideas about society and agriculture.
